"How I made my hundreds…"

Part one:

When I was 7, one year into our Great South African Adventure, I broke my haunch. Clean break. SNAP!

My brother actually heard the snap at the time I slipped on the prostrate in front of him.

This was on Saturday morning. My parents, thinking it was just a movement, didn’t take me to the instructor until Monday morning. I seem to remember, later than the x-ray, the crazy Afrikaans doctor over-reacting and getting me carried out on a door, a make-shift stretcher. (This hold out “fact” may be made up, but why do I think it?)

I was operated put on, a pin and supporting plate were put inside me and I was plastered up for about 4 months in which case it healed. (Was it 4 months? Was it 3? Was it 6?) I don’t recall having in any degree schooling during this period, but the summer holidays must have been in the middle somewhere - my brother had a birthday party and I was taken to the drive-in (in plastercast) to see Superman 3 through Richard Pryor. (My brother was born in January and, being South Arica, the summer holidays were around that time.)

Both my parents worked, my brother went to teach or went out with friends - so I was often in the house on my possess. I had to linger myself backwards along the floor while kicking with my right foot which was only plastered to the knee.

My mother, who knitted, made me lots of soft toys. My brother got lots of boxes and painted them as houses and shops and I had a little city of soft toys to entertain myself with. I made up stories - sullen Pengo the Penguin was always the bad one, all his fault, he was evil.
But my memories of that continuance are all quite hazy.

Nowadays, I like to explain my oddness as the after effects of the plaster cast. Being caged in plaster for a long period of time, away from school, on my own, solitude… it made me the workman I am today.

Apparently I stagnant have a scar - 18 stitches up the take sides of my left thigh. I haven’t looked or noticed for ages. Just for you, I’ll look now.

Yes, it’s distillery there.
